hi,
I think your failure is not in content model. If you define a target as mandatory, then you won't be able to save a node without providing a target for this childNode.

with mandatory properties, the content creation assistant is automatically requesting all mandatory missing values via the web user interface.

How can I achieve similar behavior with mandatory associations?

I have noticed, that this already works with mandatory associations defined in start tasks for an advanced workflow: here, the web interface is automatically requesting missing values - however, web-client-config-custom.xml must be properly prepared.

(Acording to http://forums.alfresco.com/en/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=18453, i guess, the webclient does not run here as a single transaction, which might be a bug!)
